Brant Gibbard's Genealogy Pages

Gibbard, Heywood, Freeman, Turnbull, and other Families.

Although I was born and raised in Ontario and have lived here all my life, the bulk of my immediate family lives in British Columbia, and has done so for a couple of generations. Prior to that all of my mother's family came to B.C. from England or Scotland. My paternal grandfather's family moved to B.C. after stays in Ontario that ranged from a few years to a generation, having arrived in Ontario from various parts of England.

My paternal grandmother's family had a different pattern, being for the most part of United Empire Loyalist extraction, and having been in Eastern Ontario since the late 18th Century. For that reason I have concentrated my research in the region of Frontenac County, and Lennox & Addington County, Ontario, as there are a very large number of people distantly related to me living in that area.

Over time my interests have expanded from just my own ancestry to a general interest in the genealogy of the Kingston area. For that reason there are a great many people in this database that I am not actually related to. These will often be people for whom I have found obituaries in the Kingston Whig-Standard. About 126,000 people are on this site, generally those persons for whom I have personally found documentation, or those persons whose lines connect me to people whom I have personally researched. Major exceptions to this are the descendants of John Freeman and Jacob Powley, where I have included nearly all branches that I know of, for the most part researched by others.

My normal practice is to avoid publishing details of living people on the web without their explicit permission. Such people will only appear on this site as placeholders, with no details, and their names replaced by the word "Living". In the event that I have inadvertently included personal information on anyone still living, I beg their pardon, and will remove it immediately upon notification. There is one area where this practice may break down from time to time. In some of my early work I put the full text of obituaries in the notes of death fields, and I am unable to prevent those notes from appearing on this site without totally suppressing all death information for all people. The problem here is that obituaries usually list the names, and sometimes the home towns of the survivors, many alive to this day. Over time I will attempt to find all of these records and convert them to another style in which that information does not appear, but it will take time for me to find them all. By this point however I believe very few of those situations remain to be corrected. If you do come across such a case involving people you know to be still alive, please bring it to my attention via the "contact me" link below, or via the "Suggest" tab to be found on all individual pages. I will fix these oversights as soon as they come to my attention.

Please note that if you are trying to contact me about something you have seen of mine on Ancestry, that I cannot reply through their messaging system. Instead use the mail icon on the right hand side of my homepage to send me an e-mail.

Even if a person is deceased, if members of the immediate family (parents, spouses, children) would rather they not be visible here I will always remove them if asked.
